Colors and Rainbows

If you did not get a stamp on Friday's classwork but finished it, I stamped it.  Please correct it here.  You will have a quiz on the Law of Reflection on Friday.

I also debriefed the refraction lab and we did a quick activity to see how light refracts and disperses into all of the colors of a rainbow through a prism.  I set up a demonstration showing how you can add light to produce "white" light as well.

The culmination of the day, and the light unit was the Rainbow Lab.  If you know where to look to find a rainbow, you will see a lot more of them!

HW:  Quiz on reflection, Physics project due Monday.

Reflection and Plane Mirrors

I taught how to draw ray diagrams and we did the reflection and plane mirror worksheet in class.

HW:  Work on physics project

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Refraction Lab

I passed back work and we debriefed the shadow lab.  We took a quiz on the properties of light.  Most of the period was spent doing the refraction lab.

Monday, May 21, 2012

Plane Mirror Lab

I checked the Pinhole Worksheet, but didn't discuss it since so many people still need to complete it.  Most of the period was spent completing the Plane Mirror Lab.  We also watched part of the Modern Marvels episode "Captured Light."

HW:  Study for quiz on properties of light; work on physics project

Great America Alternate Assignment

Read the article Physics for the Adventurous by Don Rathjen and write a 2 page typed summary.  Be sure to include information about each major section (i.e. Front and Back Cars on Coasters, Horizontal Curves and Banking, etc.) as well as the boxed section on g forces and accelerometers.

Your write up will be due to your teacher at your next class meeting (Monday for Mrs. Peters, Tuesday for Mr. Hammack, Mr. Nazari or Mr. Minyard) or you may email an electronic version to your teacher before then.  If you choose not to read and write during this period you must choose another QUIET activity.

Pinhole Viewer Lab

We did the Pinhole viewer lab and followed up with Worksheet 2 (most people finished in class).

HW:  Correct Great America Review Sheet tonight! (after going to Great America it will be too late)

Since many students were absent, I'd like to follow up with a few reminders about our trip to Great America:

This is a reminder that you need to be on the front lawn no later than 7:45 tomorrow morning.

Bring:
Great America Packet (the assignment)
Astrolabe
Pencil
Smart Phone (that has a calculator and timer)
Sun screen and/or hat (it will be sunny!)
Money for lunch or a bag lunch
Your enthusiasm

You  must ride the bus you were assigned.  If you miss the bus you must attend your regularly scheduled classes.

You will get your tickets after we leave LGHS, but before we arrive at the park.

You will need to get your vertical accelerometer after we arrive- come up to me with all your team members and I will give you an accelerometer.

You will need to be walking out of the park no later than 2:45. The buses will leave the park NO LATER than 3 pm, after we take roll.

More Great America Preparations

I checked the review sheet, but we did not go over the answers.  Answers will be posted on Thursday.  We spent most of the period making an astrolabe and doing the calculations for determining the height of a distant, tall object.

HW:  Physics project proposals are due on Thursday!

Great America Preparations

We spent most of the period preparing for our trip to Great America.

HW:  Great America Review Sheet; Read Ch. 27 and do review questions if you didn't do them last time

Final exam

We took the final today.

HW:  Assemble E & M packet

Properties of Light and Shadow Lab

I did a number of demos using the green laser and the fog machine.  We learned that you cannot see light from a laser unless there is something to reflect the light into your eyeball.  Therefore, this clip from Oceans 12 is just Hollywood special effects.

We also did the Shadow Lab and turned it in.

HW:  Read Chapter 27; Review Questions 1-23

Intro to Physics Project and Light Stations Lab

I introduced the physics project.  Key dates for the project:

Proposal due Thursday, May 17
Project due Wednesday, May 30

We also did a station lab.  Each station demonstrated different properties of light.  If you missed the lab you can make it up in tutorial on Friday or Monday.

HW:  None

If there are additional STAMPED items that are not on the list, please leave a comment below.

I don't remember what all was stamped, so please just assemble in the order listed above.  Remember, if you want full credit for items with a stamp, or half credit for non-stamped items, it must be corrected in red pen.

More review for final

I checked the E&M worksheet and corrected it in class.  I also passed back the practice final that we did and students made test correction.  We also assembled HW packets.

HW:  Study for final exam (60 questions); redo review sheets (forces, energy, waves, E&M); correct all review sheets (forces, energy, waves, E&M) if you haven't already done so.

I am available before school Wednesday and Thursday from 7-8 am if you have questions, or just email me!

Practice Final Exam

We did a group "Practice Final", corrected the waves review sheet and I gave out the E & M Review Sheet.
